From Design
to Development

I design learning experiences around what learners need to do and the support they need to do it. That shapes how I integrate generative AI, build simulations, and design multimedia.

AI IN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

At Western Governors University, I contribute to course redesign that integrates generative AI into graduate instructional design coursework. I also co-design and co-lead live events that help students use AI in their own design workflows. Across both, I emphasize keeping a human in the loop. Students learn to use AI to explore options, check its output against evidence and learner needs, and make the final design decisions.

My AI experience spans back to early 2021 which includes contract work as a mathematics subject matter expert for Scale AI and research on how generative AI can help instructional designers find and appraise evidence.

BRANCHING DESIGN AND SIMULATIONS

I design simulations and games around choices that help learners practice what they’re expected to know or do. The consequences and feedback reinforce learning by showing how those choices affect what happens next.

In my pediatric nursing simulations, students make realistic clinical decisions and receive feedback that explains the reasoning behind each outcome. I also designed Chemistry in the Wizarding World, a Unity game that uses a fantasy setting to engage learners with chemistry.

MULTIMEDIA
DESIGN

I use Mayer’s principles of multimedia learning to choose visuals, narration, and on-screen text based on what learners need to notice and understand. I also develop training and workshops that help educators and presenters apply these principles to their own materials, from using visuals to clarify a process to adding cues that highlight key details. My Lecturio article explains the research behind these choices.
